PLANTS AND PLANTING
Gardening More Sustainably
4 day course £380 (or £100 per day if booked separately)
Extreme weather patterns are making gardening increasingly challenging and we have been looking at ways to change the way we garden in the future. We’d like to share our ideas and tips with you. Over four days we will look at how to sustain our natural resources, how to create and support biodiversity and how to save water, time and money while avoiding the use of plastic, peat and pesticides. We’ll look at how to work with nature, not how to tame it, and we will make a plea for a little less order in the garden and bit more mess! Interested in joining us? Read on.
Part One – Where it all begins
We will focus first of all on our soil. We’ll show you how to test your soil then look at how to improve soil health, how to manage soil-borne pests and diseases without chemicals, the importance of fungus, how and why to create our own soil improving mulches and we will learn about the no-dig method of cultivation.
Wednesday 7th February 10-3
Part Two – Water, water
This session is all about water. How to conserve and harvest it, how to use less of it, how and why to include small and large areas of water in our gardens, the challenge of bog and rain gardens. Gardening in the future with either too much or too little water will be one of the key challenges we will all face and we need to know how to make our gardens beautiful and productive but also resilient.
Wednesday 6th March 10-3
Part Three – All about plants
If our gardens are to be resilient, they need to contain the right plants, both for us and for wildlife including pollinators. We will look at plants for dry and wet conditions, at creating and managing wildflower meadows, at forest gardening, at increasing the use of perennials in our herbaceous borders as well as our veg gardens, and at managing our trees and hedges to create shade and wildlife habitat. We will also look at how to create some plants for free and how to source others in the most sustainable way.
Wednesday 10th April 10-3
Part Four – Reduce, reuse, recycle
The final part of our journey to garden more sustainably focuses on making use of everything we already have in our gardens and should result in fewer trips to garden centres and DIY stores. Among other things we will make our own growing medium, create a composting system, discover why dead hedges are so useful, start a loam stack to create topsoil and learn how to create home grown plant supports.
